I read a qualitative study on anxiety and how it differs between cultures like how people address it and how it affects them. I had to do research on anxiety during psychology class. I remember this article because I researched it in 2022 when a lot of Iranian women were protesting against the mandatory hijab law which caused the death of a girl. The study showed no significant difference in experience of having social anxiety and supported the idea that social anxiety shares the same symptoms globally. The research was published in 2019, but I'm sure the feelings, description, and causes of anxiety can differ if it was done in 2022/2023 especially among women!

  • Why did the researchers think it was important to do this study?

The article I chose revolves around the emergency department. The researchers wanted to understand end of life care in the ED. Their main focus was dignity. Many patients who went to the ED with advanced illnesses would go constantly but the environment of the hospital was depersonalized. They wanted to do this study since those with chronic illnesses are always put into this environment that was depersonalized and can make the patients feel more vulnerable, affecting their dignity (Marti et al., 2023).

  • What did their study do that those other studies did not do?

Their study revolved around "Gadamer's Hermeneutic Philosophy." This philosophy is that language and what you say is interpreted differently between person to person so it's hard for someone to deeply understand what they may be experiencing. All the researchers had an understanding of what they were gonna ask the patients and what they were expecting since they were all nurses who had worked in the ED. They implemented this philosophy when interviewing their patients because it would help them, as nurses, understand what they were feeling and why. It's an older philosophy and doesn't seem to be used as much today so it is a little confusing!
