Please help me to understand the scenario I have a hard time understanding

Scenario:

Marcus is the HR manager for United Airlines, an Illinois-based company. One of his employees has recently become disabled and is unable to fulfill the essential functions of his current position, even with accommodations. The employee has applied for another position for which he is qualified and where his disability can be accommodated. However, Marcus has also received an application from an external candidate with more experience in an equivalent position at a different company. Whom should Marcus hire?Please explain.
