Question 1 (20 marks) 1000 households are taken at random and divided into 3 groups: A, B and C according to the total weekly income. The following table shows the numbers in each group having automobiles: European made, Japan made and none (no automobiles at all). Income Group A B C European Made 56 51 93 Japan Made 118 207 375 None 26 42 32 (a) Suggest an appropriate statistical test to test if there exists an association between total income and car ownership. [1] (b) Set up the hypotheses, Ho and H,, for the hypothesis testing problem mentioned in part (a). [2] (b) Given that a = 5%, determine the degrees of freedom for the statistical test you suggested in part (a). Hence, determine the rejection region. [2] (c) Find the expected frequencies for all the cells of the above table. Display your answers in the form of a table like the one above and show your calculations as well. No marks will be given if necessary step(s) for expected frequencies is/are lacking. [8] (d) Work out the value of the test statistic of the test you suggested in part (a). [5] (e) Test if there is an association between total income and car ownership. Your answer must include the critical value for comparison, decision, and conclusion. [3]
