Materials: 3 pieces of string An object of known mass OR o An emply disposable 500 mL plastic water bottle with cap, water and a measuring cup (metric) A large piece of paper Tape 2 persons to help with the data collection Pencil and protractor Procedure: 1) Tie the three pieces of string together. 21 Tie your object of known mass to one of the three strings. If you don't know the mass of your object do this first: a. If you have a kitchen scale or something that can measure in grams, find the mass of your object and record. b. If you do not have a kitchen scale, find an empty disposable 500 ml water bottle. A typical water bottle of this volume will be 12:0 grams. Measure up to 500 ml of water (1 ml of water has a mass of 1 gram.) Fill your water bottle with the measured water. Record the mass of water + water bottle. 3) Tape a large piece of paper to a vertical wall.4:23 M MT . Cut alll 75% K Pranjal . . . Have your two helpers each hold one of the two remaining strings from the string/mass apparatus in front of the paper, with the knot in the center of the paper. The strings can be at any angles, except horizontal, but make them different from each other (see diagram above). 5) Make 2 sharp marks along the line of each of the three strings, such that a straight line can be drawn later. 6) Mark the line with the mass "W" and label the other 2 lines A and B. 7) Remove the paper from the wall. 8) Draw the 3 lines that represent the 3 vectors (The Weight, Tension A, and Tension B). The three lines should all intersect at the same point, where the knot in your string was. If this is not the case, go back and do it again more carefully. 91 Draw a set of perpendicular axes on your paper with the Weight line/vector as the negative y-direction W 10) Measure and label the angles of each vector. Analysis Guiding Questions: 1. Knowing the mass of the suspended object and the angles of the 2 supporting "cables," determine the tension in each cable.
