Hello, this is IDS 105 question. If you can answer questions #1-3 under your Initial Post with at least 1 paragraph or more. Then answer questions #1-3 under your Responses Posts by using 1A and 1B. Thank you!

For your initial post, address the following:

  1. What is one example of a conflict situation you have seen in films, television shows, or books?
  2. How could you apply restorative practices in the situation?
  3. How could being vulnerable, having an open mind, and considering others help with navigating the conflict identified in the situation?

For your response posts, address the following:

  1. What is another restorative practice you could use to address the conflict your peer identified?
  2. What effect do you think using restorative practices might have on the situation your peer described?
  3. What benefits could vulnerability, having an open mind, and considering others have on the conflict identified in your peers' post?

1A) What came to mind for me was the conflict found in "X-Men." In the film, mutants, or super humans, exist throughout the world. They are discriminated against and feared for their powers. It's the supremacists and Magneto vs. the pacifists and Professor Charles Xavier. The government is trying to pass a mutant registration act, however, this angers the mutants. The real issue of the film is civil rights for the mutants. Nevertheless, the two sides collide resulting in hundreds of deaths and several injured. Furthermore, in "X-Men: First Class" we see one of the mutants, Hank (The Beast), developing a cure for his powers in order to live a "normal" life.

The just of the story is that mutants weren't trusted because of their abilities and so they were treated differently. I believe that the government (non-mutants) and mutants (supremacists and pacifists) could have reached an agreement if they applied restorative practices. They could have meet in a safe place where each side could openly share their opinions and ideas on the matter. Furthermore, the meeting could be mediated by two people, a mutant and non-mutant, that work together in order to keep the discussion free from violence. This will be a discussion free from judgement and harm, it'll be a safe place for restoration to take place.

I believe that if a meeting such as this took place and each side was able to speak their mind and reach an agreement, then a war could have been avoided and equality could have been achieved. No longer would mutants regret being born with powers. Hank wouldn't have to try making that cure, the world would be a safe place. I realize that it's impossible to eliminate all injustice and persecution, however, I believe that this would have resolved most issues. Also, this is a movie/comic, so true equality is possible.

1B) I just watched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so I thought I'd use that as my film of choice. One major conflict in the movie was that the main character was put down by the other characters because they weren't confident he was good enough to do what they needed to do. The main character was new to his abilities and didn't have full control over them, which led the side characters to believe that he may be unreliable.

The use of restorative practices may not have had a major change to the overall plot of the movie, but it could have made the main character feel more confident in himself and have allowed him to become even stronger than he gets at the end of the movie.

Something as simple as the side characters coming together and having a discussion with the main character and helping him master his powers rather than writing him off as useless could have made the final battle of the movie much easier, although the result would likely remain unchanged. It is important to understand everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, but nobody can improve on something unless they know how to. The main character being provided this information early could have allowed him to change some of the outcomes in the earlier battles of the movie.

If the side characters were more vulnerable and open to putting hope in the main character, they would have been significantly more willing to help him through his problems but instead, they left him behind and told him to not show up. If they all had more open minds, they would have realized that they all started the same as him, confused and scared. He has all of these new powers with no clue how to use them, and if they were a bit more considerate they would have realized they should have helped him grow rather than to put him down and write him off as useless.
