As an engineer-in-training (EIT), you have been asked by your boss to design a single lane bridge to accommodate the ready-mix concrete truck shown in Figure 1(a) below. The bridge will be simply supported and has a span of 17 metres. Based on his experience, your boss has recommended that you design the bridge using a cross-section comprising two plote girders and a non composite concrete deck Design the plate girders assuming that the moment resistance at the midpoint of the span with govern their capacity. It can be assumed that the design truck will travel down the centreline of the bridge so that the two plate girders will equally share all loads. In addition to the live load of the ready-mix truck. the specified dead load of the cross-section (including girders, deck, and barriers) is 34 kN/m. Use 640.21- 350W structural steel for the plate girders and intermediate broring and all applicable dead, live, and dynamic load factors can be found in the CHBDC (CSA S6-14).
