Person 1
Option 3:
I went on USA facts and learned a lot of statistics and information about the United States. For example, crime has been going down since the 1980's. Crime has decreased 60% since the 1980 and is slowly declining each year. The states with the lowest crime rate are in the Northeast while the highest crime rates are in the South and West. The next section I looked into was firearms. There wasn't much information but I learned that there was a 14% increase in deaths by firearms. The next section I researched was population growth in the United States. For the last 11 years, the United States population has increased. The largest annual growth percentage was 1%. On average the country grew 0.6% per year. According to USA Facts, Hispanic/Latino had the largest population growth increasing by 11.9 million, from 50.7 to 62.6 million in 2021. For my last section, I looked into "Inflation Rate for People at each age". I learned that consumer prices have increased 9.1% from June 2021 to June 2022. This is the highest rate since 1981. This includes bananas, electricity, haircuts, and over 200 other categories of goods and services. This was the most interesting section for me to learn about.

Option 3
The first thing that caught my attention was immigration. This has been an important topic in the past several years. I noticed that in basic statistics, the immigrant population in general is steadily rising. The unauthorized immigrant population is also steadily rising, which is cause to worry. Because where are all these people going to go, who will take care of them, and how will they live if they have no rights? I looked at a map that detailed where the border checkpoints are between the US and Mexico. There are 65 checkpoints and while I was not surprised that most are in Texas, I'm surprised that we really only hear about border crisis reports from Texas checkpoints. There wasn't detailed information but I assume that those points are just easier for migrants to access than the spots in California, Arizona and New Mexico. It was surprising to learn that New Jersey and Washington, states super far from the border, are among the top five states to have the biggest immigrant populations.
Another topic I looked into was education. I was very surprised to see that the reading proficiency rates were so low, less than 40% of students even meet "proficient" standards. It is good to see that over about 40 years, the dropout rate has decreased significantly, down to about 5% in 2017. The data for number of teachers looks to have grown steadily from 1956 - 2017, but I would be very curious to see the data through 2021, because I know there was a huge drop off during the pandemic.
