Help please
July is a single mother with a child in kindergarten. She was unhappy in her marriage, so she became involved in a relationship with her boss. He was very supportive of her, encouraging her to continue her studies, and she graduated from a college of law. Her boss is her child's father, and soon after the boy was born, she was divorced by her husband. Her son is 4 years old, and since his birth, July and the boy has been supported financially by her boss and she has not worked. Meanwhile, the boss has divorced his wife but he does not want a committed relationship. He has a relationship with July but also sees other women. July is now living with her son in an apartment rented by him. She is feeling lonely right now. He told her explicitly that he would not get married again. But she still hopes that "he can change, he can be a very good father, he is my son's father and he can be a good husband!" His support is only financial, and even though he promises to spend more time with them, especially with his son, he is not doing this. July's current complaint is that she has an important exam that she must pass before she can actually practice law. If she completes it successfully she can get a job that pays well, but she cannot study because of the turmoil her life is in. Passing the lawyer's exam can be her passport to freedom. She cannot study because the material is not easy and because she is thinking of her life, of all the things that are constantly happening. She knows that if she passes the exam she can gain her independence; if she doesn't pass it, she will continue to be dependent. She says: "But anyway I am depending on him. It is a very difficult exam. Even though I'm trying very hard to study, I need his help; he knows 'very important people' in the system. To pass an exam like this it is not enough to study; you have to know 'somebody important.' You may have to bribe 'somebody important' to pass and get a job." Questions 1. What are the many conflicts, discrepancies, and mixed messages involved in this case? 2. How might you work toward some type of resolution? 3. Write a confrontation statement for this client. 4. Evaluate the change process via the Client Change Scale.
