gospel music by white Australian gospel choirs states nis objectives in the abstract, as the objectives of his essay are to prove two points-his conclusions, in fact: This essay examines how the medium of gospel music facilitates a dialogic performance of "Hackers." This essay also addresses the politics of appropriation, highlighting the ways in which Australians explain their interest in and performance of gospel music and the tronics that underlie there explanations. (p. 99) What metatheoretical perspectives (see Chapter 2) do you think these researchers tend toward? Researchers "seeking to understand or describe" reality tend to lean toward the interpretivist tradition. They are using the open-ended study objective (rather than the more specific research question and even more precise hypothesis, to be explained in the next section) to study a reality they believe to be chaotic and subjective. ..................................................... ...... How Do You Ask Research Questions? What is a research question? Research questions are questions scholars ask about research question the way things work. Just as research can be basic or applied (see Chapter 1), Questions scholar research questions can be either basic or applied. In our field, most research about the way thin questions are about the nature of communication or about the relationship work between two or more variables. We'll talk more about variables in Chapter 7, but for now you should know that when you are stating a communication research question that relates two variables, at least one of the two variables must be a communication variable, because we are scholars of the process of communication. More on that in Chapter 7. While research objectives are used by communication researchers to design open-ended research about a topic, other communication researchers pose research questions when they want to find out certain information about a topic without making a prediction ahead of time. Research questions are good starting points for new areas of inquiry, as opposed to formal hypotheses (which we will discuss shortly). Fundamentally, a communication research question must be concerned with communication, must be empirical (which means it can be experienced and is practi- cal and/or pragmatic), and must have some level of specificity. Typically, research questions ask about the who, what, when, where, and bow of communication. They ask about: Who is impacted by, or involved in, this communication act; what does this communication act look like; what are the parts of the communication act; why are the categories of the communication act; what is the outcome of the communication act; when do the parts of the communication act occur; where does the communicationExercise 14: Practicing Research Question Writing Directions In communication research, most research questions are about the "nature of communication" (Davis & Lachlan, 2017, p. 95 ) or about the "relationship between two or more variables" (Davis & Lachlan, 2017, p. 95 ).
