Bond James ("Bond") is a partner at International Services ("IS"), an international consulting firm with offices in Seattle, WA, Los Angeles, CA, and Washington D.C. Bond is the managing partner of IS' Seattle office. Bond is also the direct supervisor of M. Dench ("M"), a junior consultant at IS. Bond tells M that retention and promotion depends on whether she is seen as a "team player" who is "loyal" and "subordinate." Bond regularly criticizes M. for failing to "dress and act like a proper woman". M prefers to wear a suit and tie, while Bond demands that she wear a dress. To help M understand Bond's expectations, Bond shows M pictures of women wearing "dresses" or "skirts". "That", bellows Bond "is how you must dress if you plan to succeed at IS".
Each Friday, for the past several months, Bond has invited M to dinner at a local club. M politely rejects each invitation. In addition, at least once per week, Bond slaps M on the back and says "With your manly features, I bet you're great with a pole. We really should get together for a weekend. I have a great fishing cabin out by Antilon Lake." M politely rejects Bond's "fishing" invitations.
M openly identifies as a lesbian. Bond has never discussed his sexual identity with anyone from IS, but it is widely believed that Bond is bisexual. At the end of M's first year with IS, Bond dismisses M for "failing to maintain proper decorum". M sues Bond and IS. In the lawsuit, M claims sexual orientation discrimination and hostile workplace discrimination in violation of Title VII.
