*This sort of statement is normally considered superfluous in a higher education course. However, for the sake of clarity, I'm including it: As you know, a big part of what this course focuses on is a "consideration of audience, purpose, and tone." In large part, this is what a rhetorical analysis entails. As such, during this project, we examine and analyze writing and rhetoric, "the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing." Our assignments in this project invite you to summarize arguments and to analyze the rhetoric employed by the writers we are studying. As noted in our syllabus, we examine texts "for their historical and/or cultural relevance, or as an example of stylistic and/or rhetorical strategies and techniques." No assignment in this project, nor in this course, nor in any of my courses, requires you to adopt or personally affirm a particular set of beliefs. Reading, summarizing, analyzing, and discussing various perspectives is part of what humanities courses entail. These college-level activities are essential aspects of developing your ability to interpret and analyze complex ideas, as well as improving your writing and critical thinking.
