Here's a true story about Daniel, who happens to be a very conservative student in my Calculus class. Over winter break, in 2016, Daniel drove to Washington, DC, with his friend Casey, to try to get a photo with President-elect Trump. It was a snowy day and officials were busy building stands for the Inauguration Day festivities. Daniel wasn't going to let a little security stop him. He bought a ticket to the top of the Washington Monument and took his drone with a small camera attached. While setting up the drone to fly towards the White House, Dan accidentally fell all 558 feet to the ground. It was a good thing that he was wearing his squirrel flying suit that day. Dan wants to help supervise high rise construction and feels like his winged suit will keep him protected in high areas. Daniel made a somewhat safe landing with minimal bumps, thanks to his suit. 1. How many seconds elapsed before Daniel hit the ground? (Trust me, you do have all the information.) 2. With what velocity (in ft/sec) did Daniel hit the ground? - Ouch! 3. Covert your result from the previous work to miles per hour (5280 feet = 1 mile). Jean Adams @ 2017 Flamingo Math TM4. As Dan hit the ground, he rebounded straight back up into the air with a velocity of 80 ft/ sec because of his winged suit. How high did Daniel fly into the air on the rebound? (Hint: set t = 0 to find when Daniel is on the ground.) 5. After bouncing up and down for quite a while, Daniel finally slowed down enough to make a getaway, as the Secret Service began to arrive on the scene. Daniel knew he could outrace them if he could just get to his friend, Casey's car. It is an amazing Audi R8. He accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds. (Assume constant acceleration.) How much ground did Daniel cover in those four seconds? 6. Video evidence shows that Dan drove in a perfectly straight line from the Washington Monument, right across Constitution Avenue and crashed into the Smithsonian. He remained unscathed because a fluffy wooly mammoth got the brunt of the impact. From the video, it could be seen that Daniel covered a total distance of 5000 feet in a span of 30 seconds, before the crash. One of my former students was a police officer and added speeding at over 100 mph to the charges using the facts stated above. Explain how we can be sure his instantaneous velocity warrants this ticket. 2017 Flamingo MathTM Jean Adams
