He or she may again need advice on how to select a fund to achieve his or her objectives. There are various factors for analyzing the mutual funds or selecting a fund for the investment from the many options. a. Sponsor: The fund sponsor is one of the physical attribute in the selection of the mutual funds which shows the scope of a mutual fund family i.e. the number of funds that sponsor have in the market. The number of funds of that sponsor in the market directly helps in increasing the faith of the consumer in that fund. b. Expense Ratio and other fees: The expense ratios vary with the different funds and are according to the investment in that mutual fund. Expense ratio is the percentage of the expenses that we have to pay for managing the mutual fund. The other fees such as 12b-1 fees, Load is also there in the mutual fund but not necessary that every fund charge these other fees. c. Assets: The assets shows the amount invested in that mutual fund higher the assets larger the amount is invested in that mutual fund. d. Types of Mutual Fund: There are two types of mutual funds one is passive and other is active. Passive funds are those in which the index is associated with them and active funds are those, which are managed by portfolio managers. e. Demographic characteristic: The demographic characteristic of the fund shows the funds' investments concept as whether the funds is related to particular region or to some particular country such as emerging markets funds, developed market funds, Global Funds, US funds. The demographic shows the investment style of the funds, which is very helpful in selecting the mutual fund. f. Alpha: I came to know how particulars Mutual Fund schemes performed related to what it was expected to do. g. Beta: By comparing Mutual Fund on the basis of beta we come to know how volatile a particular Mutual Fund as related to stock market is. h. Standard Deviation: The standard deviation of a fund measures this risk by measuring the degree to which the fund fluctuates in relation to its mean return. i. Historical returns: The historical returns of the funds are very important in selecting the type of mutual fund as on the basis past returns we can also imagine the future performance of those funds. j. Taxes: During a typical year, most actively managed mutual funds sell anywhere from 20 to 70 percent of the securities in their portfolios. If your fund makes a profit on its sales, you will pay taxes on the income you receive, even if you reinvest the money you made. k. Cost of Churn: The portfolio of fund does not remain constant. The extent to which the portfolio changes is a function of the style of the individual fund manager i.e. whether he is a buy and hold type of manager or one who aggressively churns the fund. It is also dependent on the volatility of the fund size i.e. whether the fund constantly receives fresh subscriptions and redemptions. Such portfolio changes have associated costs of brokerage, custody fees etc. that lowers the portfolio return commensurately. Funds Characteristics 1. Vanguard Growth Index I (VIGIX): The fund had the lowest expense ratio in all four mutual funds. The fund sponsor have large number of funds in the market and its one of the oldest sponsor in the market. The total asset of the fund is about $45.1 billion, which is the highest in the four funds selected. The fund is passive which shows the funds will move according to the benchmark index. The fund has investment in the large cap growth companies so the funds will be less volatile and will have fewer betas as compare to the fund. The alpha of the fund is 0.12 which shows the fund provide similar return as that the index is providing and the fund is moving according to index. The fund has the 99.75% of the total capital invested in the US stocks that shows the fund has less international exposure. If we look over the past returns of the funds the fund is providing the consistent positive return in the past that is one of the positive lookout of the fund. 2. Fidelity Blue Chip Growth (FBGRX) As per the name resembles the fund only invests in the blue chip companies around the world. This fund has second highest exposure in the international market which has both pros and cons as the fund has exposure to international market its difficult to analyze the performance but on other hand the fund has diversification to some extent. If we see the category rank of past seven years the fund is the best in its category ranking. The fund is able to achieve position in top three ranking category. If we look over the past returns of the funds the fund is providing the consistent positive return in the past that is one of the positive lookout of the fund. The fund have highest turnover rate in all four funds. 3. Vanguard PRIMECAP Inv (VPMCX) The fund has second lowest expense ratio in the comparison of all four funds. The fund sponsor have large number of funds in the market and its one of the oldest sponsor in the market. The total asset of the fund is about $45.6 billion that is the highest in the four funds selected. The fund manager is the most experience lead manager in the all three active funds. The lead manager has around 28 years of experience as a lead manager which shows the fund is in the good hands. The fund has the lowest turnover in comparison of all the four funds that is not the good sign for the fund. The fund has highest positive and the constituent returns in the past which shows the fund will performs better in near future. If we look the category rank the fund achieve 1st rank in its category and also the fund raking is gradually improving every year from past five years. The fund has highest foreign investment part in the investment as compare to the other funds. 4. Wells Fargo Advantage Growth Inv (SGROX) The fund has highest expense ratio in comparisons to all four funds. The total asset associated with this fund is around $10.6 billion, which is lowest in all funds that we have selected. The yield from the fund we can see is 0% that shows the negative approach to the fund. Also if we look into the category ranking of the fund the fund have worst ranking in comparisons all four funds. According to the above analysis based on the facts the \"Vanguard PRIMECAP Inv (VPMCX)\" is the best fund to make investment as funds belongs to one of the good sponsors. Also the fund has highest assets associated with it of around $45.6 billion. Also the fund is active and if we look over the alpha of the fund is 4.79 which shows the fund give far much better return than that of the index
