Hi class, I found that the combination of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and thearousal theory had resonated most with me in regards to explaining motivation best. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is defined within our text as the "hierarchy of needs that spans the spectrum of motives reaching from biological to the individual to the social". Furthermore, " according to Maslow (1945), one will satisfy lower-level needs before addressing those needs" that "occur higher" up.(Ch. 10, Lesson 1) Ifelt that Maslow'stheory combined with the arousal reduction theory was a very convincing explanation for motivation. I saythisbecausewhen we have all of our basic needs meetsuchas those listed in Maslow's hierarchy of needs: physiological, security, social, esteem and self-actualization we can better focus on properly stimulating ourselves whether that be through relaxing and taking a bath after completing a hard test or it be researching new concepts when you're bored.I felt that the leastconvincingtheory was the drive reduction theory. The drive reduction theory is written in our text as having"deviations from homeostasis create physiological needs..." which "...result in psychological drive states that direct behavior to meet the need and ultimately bring the system back to homeostasis". (Ch. 10, Lesson 1) I felt this wasn't very convincing because of some peoples ability to simply ignore deviations such as hunger
