Your report should include about a paragraph summarizing the company's history (what business they are in, etc.). The report needs to be professional and in MLA format. You can do your ratio calculations in Excel (using formulas), but you also need to present your findings from the ratios in the report. SHOW YOUR WORK!! I can see how you calculated the ratios if you turn in your Excel, but if you choose to just turn in the Word report, you need to show me the formula and numbers you used in your calculations. For each ratio, you need to show your calculation and write a couple sentences about what that ratio tells you about the company. You also need to have at least a paragraph covering a comparison of your company and competitor in terms of ratio analysis. Please write the report in your own words. Do not copy a website or your book verbatim or you will be flagged for plagiarism. Discuss the horizontal analysis. What does it tell you about the company? How can your company improve? Look at some of the news stories that have been released about your company in the last two years. Do the events covered in the news shed any light on the ratios? Write a conclusion (paragraph at least) that summarizes your recommendations for the company to improve their ratios/profitability based on your analysis. For this project, you will act as though you are a manager for that company. Perform a horizontal analysis on your company's income statement and on the balance sheet for two years of financial statements utilizing Microsoft Excel. http://finance.yahoo.com/ is a good resource to locate company financials. For example, for Gap Inc, on the Yahoo! Finance page, click in the box next to "Get Quotes". Type in Gap as the name of the company you want to analyze and a list of options will pop up. Select the company you want and then look at all the information that Yahoo! has available. The first page mostly has stock information, but on the left side of the page, there are many different options for research. At the bottom of that list, there is a section on "Financials". You can click on your company's income statement, balance sheet or Cash flow statement from there. You can then use that information to perform a common size income statement analysis. Publicly traded companies are also required to make their financials available, typically found through an investor's relations link at the bottom of the company's main webpage. The webpage www.sec.gov also has financial statements for publicly traded companies available. Through the SEC website, you can download the Excel version of all the company's financial statements. Requirement 2 Calculate (Show your calculations!) the following ratios for your company utilizing Microsoft Excel: 1. Acid test ratio 2. Current Ratio 3. Inventory turnover (if applicable, service companies will not have inventory) 4. Gross Margin percentage (or Profit Margin) 5. Accounts receivable turnover (if applicable) 6. Debt to equity ratio 7. Return on total assets 8. Return on Equity 9. Earnings Per Share 10. Price-earnings ratio If your company had a net loss, then some of your ratios may be negative (#7 and #8 particularly). Some ratios might not be applicable for your company. For each ratio, write a sentence or two explaining what conclusions you can make from those ratios as a manager. You can't analyze a ratio until you understand what it measures. Your book and websites such as Investopedia.com are good sources of information on ratios and what they tell you about a company. Find a competitor to compare your company's ratios with (Yahoo! Finance can help you find competitors and access their ratios as well). Page 1 of 2 648 words English (United States) 100%
