There are benets for both employers and employees when workers are allowed to perform their duties from the comfort of their own homes. Businesses benet from remote work because it broadens their pool of potential employees to include those who live and work in other locations. Remote work allows them to hire people who cannot move to the area where the office is located. As a result of having fewer employees, businesses can save money by reducing the size of their offices. It helps businesses save money on salaries as well. Rather than basing salaries on the location of the business itself, it is possible to pay workers at rates that are more reective of where they reside. Due to not having to pay for gas, employees save money. The decrease in emissions is an additional bonus. Probably most importantly, though, employees who occasionally or regularly work away from the office report higher levels of satisfaction. when Best Buy introduced its Results-Only Work Environment {ROWE}. in which some workers could do their jobs from anywhere so long as they were completed, employee satisfaction skyrocketed. Cisco is one major company that has seen great success with remote workers. Cisco estimates that it has saved millions of dollars in productivity costs thanks to its virtual office technology, which has allowed employees to work from home. The fuel savings extended to employees as well. More than ninety percent of respondents said that the option to work remotely was very important to their job satisfaction, and Cisco's survey found that remote workers spend more than 60 percent of their time using the company's technology for collaboration and communication. Around eighty-five percent of Cisco's workforce occasionally operates away from the office. Contrarily, research has shown that managers are less likely to remember and promote employees who work remotely. Managers rely heavily on observation when deciding whether to promote an employee. How employees participate in meetings and handle conict resolution can play a significant role in their career advancement. Remote workers are at a disadvantage because they are not included in these activities. There is a lack of understanding among businesses regarding how to best utilize remote workers. When businesses attempt to organize their remote workers in the same ways as their in-office staff, they often run into problems. Yahoo and Bank of America. for example, are abandoning workefromehome policies because of the drawbacks they present. Both companies are having financial difficulties and need to find ways to work together more efficiently and save money. Some Bank of America employees were keeping offices open while spending most of their time working remotely, which was inefficient and cost the company money. Melissa Meyer, Yahoo's CEO, has said that working from home often slows down production and lowers quality. Even though email is convenient, it cannot replace face-to-face communication in the workplace, where ideas can be discussed and debated and ultimately improved upon. A second criticism is that employees are less committed to their companies than they once were. This shift back to office hours is an effort to foster a sense of camaraderie among employees. They feel that when employees are not all working in the same area, innovation suffers. It is also possible that originality will suffer. For instance, casual encounters in the workplace, such as chance meetings in the hallway, can spark conversations that can lead to the development of novel concepts or products. Because of the importance of body language in conversation, it can be difficult to convey nuanced ideas via electronic means such as emails or video calls. Having a job provides many benefits, including the development of personal connections, friendships, and professional networks. It aiso provides an avenue for supervisors to become more involved in their staff's daily activities. As a result, Yahoo has had to deal with a lot of controversy surrounding its new work-from-home policies. Workers, especially parents of young children, would benefit from more freedom than is afforded by an ofceonly policy. Employees who must travel further to get to work will likely see a rise in their monthly gas bills. Some employees also feel wronged because they were hired with the expectation that they could work remotely and then told they would have to return to the ofce. Finally, detractors say the company may be hiding behind the new poiicy to cover up its true motivation for altering it: the need to reduce staff
