use at least three cited sources. The paper must:

  • Require students to devise and defend a thesis;
  • Use sound logic;
  • Empower students to evaluate their progress;
  • Correctly apply at least one economic concept covered in class;
  • Utilize appropriate evidence; and
  • Demonstrate effective communicative skills.

ECON 201 Signature Assignment(Example: Economists Estimating GDP vs. Measuring the RealStandard of Living in a Nation) Economics is a widely applicable discipline, able to shed light on a variety of everyday events. Rare is the news article that doesn't, in some way, invoke basic economic concepts such as scarcity and incentives. This assignment has two parts.

The paper's two parts mentioned above are:

  • The Article. Find a recent (no more than one year old) opinion piece that connects to an idea like demand and supply or GDP. The piece must be of substantial depth and published by a reputable source. (Such as the ones in Our syllabus that have many of them).

You must disagree with the thesis of the piece. It doesn't have to be a strong disagreement, but key idea of the piece must be something you would not prefer.

summarize the article, paying special attention to any policy proposals the article champions or criticizes. Make sure to include a citation (this does not count towards your word limit).

I encourage you to ask yourself some questions about your summary to help you craft a good essay such as the following one for examples:

    • "What, if anything, did you notice about the article that was puzzling?"
    • "How does your summary incorporate the article's central theme?"
    • "While you were writing your summary, did you consider any implications or complications concerning the topic at hand?"
    • "Is there anything you learned from the article that might change your mind?"

  • The Extension. You now have an opportunity to respond to the piece you selected. In this essay, whereas you will:
    • Craft your own thesis about the policy mentioned in the piece you chose;
    • Summarize the piece, as you did in the first part (though you may opt to make this summary briefer, as appropriate);
    • Defend your thesis using sound logic and at least one economic concept (this should be the bulk of your paper);
    • Employ appropriate evidence; and
    • Cite your sources, including any new sources you used to craft your argument. Such as another author who go along with your opinion.
