image text in transcribed ACCG 399: Accounting in Context Current Conceptions of Accounting Tutorial 1 - Week 2 This written Comprehensive Professional Portfolio is comprised of individual and group tasks which are to be completed within tutorials and will require further work and writing up outside of the classroom. These set of tutorial activities extending till the end of the session, are intended to take you through a learning journey of exploration and development. They have been specifically designed to incorporate not only a reallife perspective to your university learning but also to further enhance graduate capabilities such as your ability to engage in critical, analytical and integrative thinking, problem solving and research capability, socially and environmentally active and responsible citizens and the ability to exercise professional and personal judgement and initiative, into your final year experience. It is with this in mind that we hope you will be equipped with the skills necessary for higher level study and effective professional performance. Thought Activity We would like you to take some time between your introductory class and your first tutorial the following week to complete the activity outlined below. You will need to read these prompts carefully and use the space provided to outline your thoughts. It can be an interesting exercise to do upon the commencement of a course to think about your current conceptions and values. Reflect back on your overall learning in your accounting degree for the last two years. Provide a description of your current conceptions of accounting, accountability and an accountant. In other words, what is it that you perceive, see, feel and think about each of these three concepts? What you have learned up until this point? The things you have enjoyed? The things you have found difficult, struggled with or were just really confusing? Why you have struggled with these aspects and how they made you feel? Things that you would still like to discover? How you might approach your learning in accounting differently in the future? Leave for a couple of days and come back to this - re-read what you originally wrote. Can you now stand back from your entry you have described? Does it look any different to you now? In what way? 1 Is there anything that might be absent from your description that you would like to add? If so, discuss this. Is there anything that you would like to remove from your description, if so can you describe this and explain why? Can you start to see your description from different points of view - that may be helpful for you to explore? Can you describe this? Write a reflective entry on this here (if you need more space please expand further): 2 You will need to bring your written thought activity with you along with some glue and a copy of a lifestyle magazine such as the (Sydney) magazine, Sundaylife etc sourced from your local newspaper to your tutorial. Tutorial Engagement Activity During your tutorial in week 2 you are required to engage in an individual and peer discussion activity that asks you to construct a photographic image collage. Just before you engage with this. For the first 5 minutes of the tutorial you will need to introduce yourself to your peers around you. You will need to form groups of 4-5 inside this tutorial - as these will then become the groups you will work with for the group submission of the portfolio final report. All students will need to form a group within their tutorial class. Each tutor will record the members of the groups, your names, student ID numbers and will keep this as a record. Once you have done this then follow the guide described below to complete your photographic image collage activity: 1. For the next 20 mins - you will have each brought with you to the first tutorial a popular lifestyle magazine (similar to what is found in the local Sunday newspapers in Sydney - the (Sydney) magazine, Sundaylife etc). You are now required to browse through your magazine/s viewing the pictures and making a connection to 'accounting', 'accountability' or 'an accountant'. If you can make a connection tear out the picture and attach it to the A3 sheet of paper your tutor has provided you with. 2. During the next 5 mins - once you have completed your collage turn to the person next to you and discuss for 5 mins one connection that you have each made between the pictures and accounting. 3. For the last 20 mins - your tutor will now ask for volunteers that would like to talk about the collage they have created to the tutorial group - discussing their 3 connections, linkages and points of interest. Students are encouraged to discuss as a group key points and images raised and whether that is how they view accounting, accountability and an accountant, or not! Post-Thought Activity In the next couple of days after your tutorial you will need to complete this post-thought activity and document your thoughts in the spaces provided below. 1. How did you find your experience of this tutorial activity, in general? B 2. How did it make you feel when completing this activity? 3. Can you identify two useful aspects of this activity? 4. Can you describe how you visualised (saw) accounting, based on the images you sourced? 4 5. Look back to your written description outlined in your Thought Activity and think about this in comparison with your collage image. Has your perspective changed or developed in any way since then, if so can you describe this? 6. Can you briefly outline key aspects of the discussion that took place in class afterwards? Can you describe how this discussion made you feel? Was it beneficial for you? If so, can you outline why and if not, can you describe this? 5 7. Outline what you gained personally from completing this activity? What are you required to Submit? You are required to submit to your tutor during your next tutorial - the following week a collated neatly presented folio of work containing: 1. A completed written description to the thought activity. 2. The photographic image collage that you have created during your tutorial. 3. Completed written descriptions of the post-thought activities described above. Your tutor will collect this from you and keep a record of each of your submissions. Please remember a failure to submit this piece of work on time will result in a forfeiture of 3% of your overall Comprehensive Professional Portfolio mark. It is a requirement of this unit that you achieve a passing grade in your Comprehensive Professional Portfolio to receive a passing grade or higher in this unit overall. 6
