  1. Do the Unit 3 Discussion Questions in MyStatLab.- Done
  2. For the Discussion activity, you will be doing a Letter Frequency Analysis and conducting a Goodness of Fit Test comparing your letter probability distribution to a study conducted by Cornell University in 2004.
  3. You will choose a passage from a book, poem, or other written work. The work must have at least 150 words. Your passage must be in English and display overall correct grammar (i.e. no weird songs). Each class will be a letter. i.e there will be 26 classes: A-Z.Create a frequency tablecontaining the class (letter) and its frequency in the passage. (Make sure to note the total number of letters by adding up the frequency column. This is your sample size n.)
  4. We are testing the hypotheses:: The population fits the given distribution (from the Cornell study)

  6. Compute the sample test statistic 2. Download the Excel file in the Unit 3 Lesson Module: Unit 3 Discussion: Cornell Letter Frequency Study (Note that the letters are not in alphabetical order). Use the relative frequency for each letter as the probability of getting that letter. Calculate the expected frequencies E of each letter using YOUR SAMPLE SIZE n. (For example E for A is E = 0.0812384*n, where is the total of the frequency column for YOUR PASSAGE!!!). You may use StatCrunch to find 2or build a computation table in Excel.
  7. What is the degree of freedom?
  8. We will use the level of significanceto conclude the test. You may either use the P-value approach or the Critical value approach.
  9. Interpret your results in context. If you rejected H0, what does that mean? If you did not reject H0, what does that mean?
  10. Analyze the results of your hypothesis test.

  1. Post to the Unit 3 Discussion by clicking on Discussion in the left side menu of your Blackboard course.You will create a post wherein you answer the following questions.Attach your Frequency Table. Your post should have a minimum of 250 words.Describe your passage. What was it from? Why did you choose it? (DO NOT REPRINT YOUR PASSAGE IN THE POST!)
  2. What was E for R for your passage?
  3. What was your sample test statistic 2? How did you find it?
  4. What was the degree of freedom? Can you do a Goodness of fit test? (i.e. do you meet the requirements?)
  5. Describe the test. Did you use a P-value or the Critical value? How did you conclude the test?
  6. Interpret your results in context. If you rejected H0, what does that mean? If you did not reject H0, what does that mean?
  7. Analyze the results of your hypothesis test. What might a test like this be used for?
  8. Read another students post and their hypothesis test and analysis. Do you agree with their conclusion? Your response should not be one sentence! It should be at least a paragraph!
