2.0. Main Body History of Ivory Coast and its colonial era The first French immigrants arrived in 1687, although they did not gain the legal power to control Cote d'Ivoire until the mid-19"century. In the 1840s, France negotiated many 11 contracts with the Grands Bassam territories and Kings of the Assini, establishing a French protectorate over their lands. By the late 1880s, France had entirely controlled the country's coastal areas, and Cote d'Ivoire was designated a French colony in 1893. The main goal of France was to enhance export production. They began by farming cocoa, coffee and palm oil along the coast. They also forced the residents to work in the settlers' plantations. France levied a head tax in 1900 to fund a public works programme in the territory, and then the tax was rejected because the locals considered it a breach of the conditions of the contracts that had been signed. As a result, the government forced the local men to perform ten days of unpaid work each year as part of their obligation to the nation. In 1905, slavery finally ended. From 1904 to 1958, Cote d'Ivoire was a member of the Federation of French West Africa; under the third French republic, it served as a colony and an overseas territory (History Central, 2020). Paris handled French West Africa's political affairs until the years right after World War II. All Africans in Cote d'Ivoire were considered formally French subjects, meaning they had no right to citizenship or representation in Africa or France (History Central. 2020)Cote d'Ivoire has a significant growth in the past 60 years. According to the World bank (2022), In 1960, the GDP per capita growth for Cote d'Ivoire was about $155.9 per person, and in 2021, it increased to $2,578.8. This means Cote d'Ivoire experienced enormous economic progress. Compared to Middle-income countries, Cote d'Ivoire's GDP is lower than the middle-income countries. In addition, compared to the low-income countries, Cote d'Ivoire's GDP is higher than the low-income countries' GDP (World bank, 2022). Overall, Cote d'Ivoire is considered a low-middle income country. GDP per capita (current US$) - Cote d'Ivoire, Middle income World Bank national accounts data, and OFCD National Accounts data files.
