Hi,
Please respond to this post:
Are major sports leagues monopolies?
When you look at the major sports leagues of today, you think of the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, and PGA, just to name a few. All of these organizations act as a monopoly.
For instance, the MLB is the only producer playing professional baseball in the United States. It has a lot of smaller farm teams and teams at the professional level, but everything has to go through or come from the MLB Head Office. For this reason, Major League Baseball seems to me to be a monopoly since it is pretty much run by one main organization (MLB).
You could make this same case for each of the major sports leagues, so I have a series of questions to ask. What do you think when you categorize these leagues as monopolies? Is that good for the games, or should they be broken up with anti-trust laws just like other monopolies are? Would that reduce the prize like the World Series or Super Bowl? How would it change if the leagues were broken down to not be monopolies?
