The Question:
Provide one example of a situation that you experienced or observed that fit into one of the stages of personal diversity awareness.
Explain the situation and answer the following questions:
- Identify the stage of personal diversity awareness for the situation (i.e., Defense, minimizing differences, acceptance, adaption, Integration)?
- What happened in the situation that helped you identify the stage of diversity awareness?
- How did the situation make you feel?
- Would you handle the situation in the same way or do something differently?
My answer:
While I live in an area that is - for lack of a better term - almost completely white, I'm in an interesting position as I have a grandmother who is ethnically Chinese and grew up in the Philippines, and a sibling who is autistic. As far as events with my grandmother go, I don't have a lot to talk about. We moved out of the state she lived in when I was six, and we've seen her sparingly since then. The most I can really offer is that I didn't realize she wasn't my biological grandmother until long after we had moved, and no small part of my taste in cuisine has come from Chinese staples she either prepared or taught to my mom.
In regard to my sibling, I have a lot more stories. For the most part, they have to do with people not really being sure how to handle a several autistic individuals and my mom having to step in to ensure she still had opportunities to do things with her peers. The one exception I can think of to that trend would be our church's former youth minister. While our mom would still often have to be around to help with her, he made efforts to involve her in the ongoing activities and engage her in whatever limited conversation he could. Going off of the chart provided in 11-4 of Daft, I'd say he was working at the integration level. Despite having to handle a large group of mostly middle schoolers, he made notable efforts to adapt to her way of thinking and getting her to participate with whatever the group was doing.
