High School students were given a short course in basic algebra. Students were randomly assigned to one of the following conditions: courses lasting for 5, 10, or 15 sessions. At the conclusion of the course, participants were asked to take an exam which included several math problems. Before taking the test, participants in each group were offered a monetary incentive-no money, $ 15.00 or $ 30.00 for a certain level of performance. The researcher collected the number of correct answers on the math exam for each participant.

  1. Is this scenario an experimental research, case study, archival research or naturalistic observation?
  2. What is the purpose of this study?
  3. How participants were assigned to the different conditions?
  4. Identify the factorial design
  5. Identify the total number of conditions
  6. Clearly identify the independent variables AND the levels of each variable. (Note: be careful when identifying the IV and the levels. A common mistake is to use the levels of the IV as the IV)
  7. Is this an IV X PV design? If so, identify the participant variable(s)
  8. What kind of design represents this scenario: Choose ONE and FULLE EXPLAIN your answer.
    1. independent groups design (identify the two groups)
    2. repeated measures deigns (identify the repeated variable)
    3. split plot design (identify the two groups and the repeated variable
  9. Identify the dependent variable.
  10. If you need ten participants for each condition,
    1. How many participants do you need for this particular scenario?
    2. Provide the total numbers of participants and fully explain how you arrived to this answer.
