Hiree Horatio is an alter ego for his hirer, Apollonia Appointer, who has given Horatio specific orders to follow. However, Horatio works on Apollonia's behalf in Horatio's "own inimitable way" (rather than, as Horatio disdainfully puts it, "having to channel every little one of Apollonia's whims").
