HMD 203 - Interview Report (300 pts.) Due before 11:59 PM (PST) Friday, June 7th, 2024 Purpose: This assignment is designed to give you the opportunity to meet a hotel management professional. Please make the best of it. Refer to chapter 2 (exhibits 1-3) of your textbook when preparing for the interview and the report. Requirements / Instructions: For this interview report you are asked to interview a hotel management professional and provide a short report (double-spaced, 1" margins, Times New Roman font size 12, a minimum of 3-full pages - not including photo/image inserts) based on the questions specified below. Given the busy schedules of these professionals, it is always possible that interview appointments could get cancelled - be sure to have a contingency plan to meet the deadline. 1. The person interviewed MUST currently hold a management or supervisory position (preferably in a full-service hotel or resort; please refer to the exhibits on pages 64-65 of your textbook). Non-lodging related positions and establishments are not qualified. For the purposes of our course, the following management/supervisory positions are acceptable (though the exact titles may slightly differ): a. Hotel General Manager or Assistant General Manager b. Director of Rooms, Front Office Manager, Hotel Manager, Front Desk Supervisor, Night-Audit Director, Hotel Manager-on-Duty, Assistant Front Desk Manager, Front Desk Shift Manager/Supervisor c. Executive Housekeeper, Director of Housekeeping, Housekeeping Supervisor, Assistant Housekeeping Manager d. Hotel Guest Services Manager / Director of Hotel Guest Service e. Hotel Sales Manager (Sales and Marketing Director) f. Hotel Human Resources Manager or Director of Learning & Training g. Hotel Controller, Accounting Manager or Director of Revenue h. Hotel IT/IS Director i. Hotel Concierge Supervisor, Director of Hotel Concierge Services j. Director of Security for Hotel Ops., Asst. Security Director of Hotel Operations k. Director of Hotel Reservations l. Director of Hotel Operations You may choose any hotel property where you can access a qualified interviewee. Consider selecting a hotel property that is the most accessible to you. The interview can be conducted face-to-face, via video call or phone call. Please introduce yourself (identifying yourself as a UNLV Hospitality College student), briefly explain the course assignment, and request a short appointment (15 minutes) for an interview. Consider visiting the property during off-peak times to make your request for the interview; avoid check-in/check-out times.

Begin your report by including the full name and exact title of the interviewee b. Contact information: company phone (direct line) and person's company e-mail account (please make sure that the information is correct before submitting the assignment; check for typos, etc.). c. Place of employment - the hotel name, location, local phone number d. Date, time, and duration of interview e. Photo or scan of business-card of person interviewed. You are also welcomed to include a selfie with your interviewee if he/she agrees to do so. The photo insert does not count towards the 3-full page minimum requirement for this report. Note: if the above information is inaccurate, incomplete, or cannot be confirmed, you will not receive any credit. 3. Ask the following questions and write down the responses provided. Required Order/Format: question#, question, and the response provided; highlight the responses provided in italics. As long as the interviewee grants permission, you are welcome to record the interview to take notes later. i. How many years have you been working in the lodging industry? ii. What is a typical day for you at your position? Please describe. iii. What is the most needed (most important) competency to carry out your job responsibilities? iv. Do you see any hotel positions being replaced by technology in the future? For example, would front desk agents be replaced by Robots? Please explain. v. What is the most challenging management issue you are facing at this property? vi. What is the most challenging management issue the hotel industry is facing today? Why? vii. Can you describe a best management practice you are currently using or would like to use at this hotel? viii. What are the key factors for success in hotel management? Please ask at least two (2) more additional questions within the context of our course's learning objectives and include the responses in your report. I recommend that you plan for at least a few additional questions in case the responses provided are brief or lack detail. Remember, you must have a minimum of 3-full pages of content. If the responses are very lengthy, you are allowed to sum up the response. Consider how to best ask follow-up questions when needed. Finally, please include a reflection on what you have learned from this interview experience (minimum 300 words - counts towards 3-page minimum).

All submissions will be checked for originality through Turnitin software. Excluding the questions, the originality score should be below 35%. VERY IMPORTANT: Please keep in mind that we are all representatives of College of Hospitality at UNLV and everyone should conduct themselves professionally during these interviews. If unprofessional conduct is brought to my attention by the interviewee, you may not earn any credit for this assignment. Please do NOT turn in made-up interviews or misrepresent the position title of the interviewee - to do so is a violation of the student conduct code and will result in a grade of F for the entire course. I take exception to such behavior. I will report such violations to the Office of Student Conduct and recommend a notation on the student's transcript. Scheduling a successful interview can be time consuming. Please allocate your time accordingly and don't wait until the due date to complete this assignment.
