CASE STUDY #3 Policy: Histotechnology - All surgical specimens processed from the day before will be embedded, cut, stained with the H&E technique, coverslipped and given to the pathologist for examination by 1100 hours every day. Situation: The tech responsible for taking the specimens off the tissue processor at 0630 hours phoned in sick. Another employee had to attend a lab division safety meeting at 0900 hours. The tech responsible for frozen sections that day had 4 calls to surgery. (Each call averages 20-30 minutes.) There were 4 techs, including a new graduate, left to handle the remaining workload for an 11:00 am hour deadline that morning.
