When an issue in the criminal justice system presents itself or there is something that is desired to be learned more about the start is defining and developing a research question. There are multiple different ways to develop a research question. One way is examining previous research which often suggests potential further research to be done. Another source is developing a theory to then conduct research on (Bachman and Schutt, 2024). These two methods of creating a research question make a seemingly difficult process easier. It is important to take a step-by-step approach when defining and developing a research question in order to maintain control over the research (Bachman and Schutt, 2024).
Examining the parameters of an issue and researching the issue includes three factors. These factors are feasibility, social importance, and scientific relevance. The textbook, "The Practice of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice" by Ronet Bachman and Russell Schutt, discusses each of these factors when it comes to addressing a problem or issue being looked at. Feasibility means the research must be able to be conducted within a time frame and with designated resources. Social importance has to do with the topic and the need for it to be important not only the research and to public policy. Lastly, scientific relevance has to do with the need for research to be informed by previous research or grounded in other words (Bachman and Schutt, 2024). Each concept is important in the overall research at the end of the day.
