Q3: The environmental footprint of (washing your] blue jeans [26 marks] A group of environmental researchers from University of Toronto state that \"at any moment, approximately half the world's population is wearing blue Jieans or other denim garments\". When jeans are washed, tiny blue microfibers are released into the wastewater. These fibers are often not captured by wastewater treatment plants and make their way out into natural water bodies. The researchers examined water samples from three hydrologic regimes across Canada, and counted the microfibres from blue jeans, and other industrial products, that were present in the water. They focused on the research question \"is the distribution of four types of microbers from clothing found in water samples different across dierent regions of Canada .9\". The different types offibers are shown in each column, with blue fibers coming mostly from denim. Data adapted from the study byAthey et al. {2020]. a) Using the information from the question text and the data in Table 1 to justify your answer, select the most appropriate statistical method for this research question. Be as specific as possible. [3 marks] b) Write an appropriate null and alternative hypothesis for this research question. [2 marks] C) Applythe method you selected in part a] to perform all necessary calculations to find the strength of evidence against the null hypothesis you wrote in part b], assuming a typical alpha level. Excel is recommended to perform the calculations, but please hand- write enough of your working and answers here to clearly demonstrate your knowledge of applying this method. What is the overall conclusion? [15 marks] d) Following on from the calculations in part c), find the standardized residuals for the Blue fibers group only. Excel is recommended to perform the calculations, but please hand- write enough of your working and answers here to clearly demonstrate your knowledge of applying this method. Interpret the residuals for the different regions of Canada. [6 marks]
