For this week's discussion, I chose Trek bikes as my product of choice. For this specific company, I would say my target market would be primarily young adults aged between 25-35 years old and would be targeted to men and women. A differentiation strategy that I would implement for this product, would be trying to create a high-quality, yet sustainable option. Since the target market is a younger age range, I would think many of these customers are conscious about their footprint and would like it if we provided a fairly sustainable option that would allow us to stand out from our competition. Possible features that you would find in a product like this would be an option that was almost all or mostly made of bamboo. Bamboo actually has a negative carbon output and is also an incredibly strong, lightweight wood that would be the most sustainable all while using a highly efficient material that wouldn't make a bike too heavy. At the center level of this product, it would be the core customer value, which is going to rely on the customer truly buying a product with the ease of mind that they're purchasing a high-quality bike without the worry of how it is negatively affecting the earth. Next is going to be the actual product itself, which will focus heavily on the brand name, as Trek is one of the most recognized brands regarding high-quality equipment, that looks good, feels good, and most importantly performs well. Lastly, we reach the augmented product, which focuses more on post-sale effects, and Trek is also highly regarded for its customer service. The products made by Trek typically have a very solid multi-year warranty on certain components which will help draw in customers because many other brands don't provide a good warranty program when the inevitable issues arise. The stage of this specific product is certainly still in the product development stage where Trek still needs to find the best mix between usability and sustainability. At this stage of the product's life, it is likely that they're still researching the market to find the best possible mix to ensure the highest possible sales when the product actually reaches the market. This portion of the life cycle is very crucial to make their customers aware of the product and create a "buzz" around the product.
