Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to determine the coefficient of static friction of a wooden block on the physic classroom lab table. To do so the force, in newtons, will be observed and recorded to use to calculate the normal force. This will allow us to determine the coefficient of the static friction. Diagram: Procedure: To begin, the mass of the wooden block would be recorded and added to the masses used in the experiment. The wooden block will be placed on the surface with the additional masses, using the dual range force sensor, the wooden block will be pulled which will give the force. This procedure will be repeated with the rest of the weights. The normal force, in newtons, will then be calculated using the mass of the block and the weight, as well as the force. A normal force versus static friction graph will be created with the calculated slope equaling the coefficient of static friction.
