How do I peer respond: Hello everyone, The case I decided to discuss this week is Beltran et al. v. Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc. d/b/a Crunchyroll. Sony and Crunchyroll had a 16 million dollar nationwide lawsuit over claims stating that they shared the personal information of their subscribes with third party companies. Specifically, Crunchyroll was accused to be in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act. The lawsuit applied to anyone who was a registered user of anything owned or operated by Crunchyroll between September 8, 2020 through September 20, 2023. I believe this was a civil case as it was settled by settlement payment and was a dispute between a company and its customers. The exclusion and objection deadline was November 27, 2023, the claim form deadline was December 12, 2023, and the hearing was on December 19, 2023. The $16 million covered a fee award, awards for the class representatives, attorneys' fees, any class administration expenses, and an approximate $30 apiece for every person that applied. This isn't an unusual case from what I've noticed, but it is disappointing how often it happens! I look forward to learning about the cases everyone else picked, and I hope we all have a great week!
