How do people cope with physical pain? To examine this question, participants are recruited based on their preference for spicy foods (IV1). This method results in two groups of participants: Those who enjoy spicy foods and those dislike spicy foods. To examine how they cope with pain, participants are asked to use one of two different coping strategies (IV2):listen to a favorite song or think about a favorite vacation while submerging their hand in ice water.

In the first experiment, pain tolerance is measured as the number of seconds participants can keep their hand in ice water. On average, participants who enjoy spicy foods can hold their hands in ice water for 84.50 seconds while listening to their favorite songs and 129.30 seconds while thinking about a favorite vacation. Participants who dislike spicy foods can hold their hands in ice water for 125.30 seconds while listening to their favorite songs and 78.20 seconds while thinking about favorite vacation.
