How do you acquire a federal copyright interest in a work that you create?

What does it mean that copyright law protects only the expression of the idea, but not the idea itself? (Another way of asking this question: copyright law is often said to provide thin protection what does this mean?)

What is the public domain? What happened in January 2019 for the first time in 20 years? Why?
