How Does OBM Impact the Reduction of Medical Errors? While health care has improved over the past decades, medical errors remain a major problem. These include technological errors during treatment processes, communication failures between the caregiver and the provider and the patient, contamination errors due to inadequate personnel and patient hygiene and shortcomings in patient monitoring. I will be concentrating on what OBM is and how medical errors can be minimized. Organizational behavior management (OBM) focuses on what people do, analyzes why and then uses an action technique based on research to make people more conscious of what they do. It explores different aspects including expectations and attitudes of people, diversity, communication, motivation, leadership, power, stress, conflict management, negotiating model, group dynamics, team building and organizational change management. If used effectively, OBM can be used to target certain problem areas such as communication in the healthcare environment. Communication errors with the patient can be resolved by a variety of specific behavioral strategies. One way to avoid medical errors is patient education. When patients know how to ask questions and believe they can interact easily with providers, they are encouraging safe healthcare behaviors.
