How is the role of the therapist in Gestalt Therapy different from others we have studied so far?

Corey discusses the role of "the impasse" in Gestalt Therapy. The role of the therapist is to assist clients in the experience of this sticking point in the process, and to "accompany" them through it without either "rescuing or frustrating" them. The Gestalt approach is seen as both existential and phenomenological. We have discussed existentialism, but not phenomenology so far.

The field of phenomenology places the utmost importance on the experience of the person as they themselves see it. Subjective reality is not seen as something to "treat," but instead as a doorway into how the person's perceptions influence their current state of being. As such, the notion of "awareness" also comes into play with Gestalt Therapy and is an integral part of assisting the client in working through current issues or problems.
