Managing a business or organization in the diverse society that we live in requires a certain level of intercultural competence and knowledge of cultural workplace norms. It was interesting to ponder that "most business and organizations can be thought of as mini-cultures" (Neuliep, 2021) due to the ever increasing cultural backgrounds present in the workplace. In the United States, managers often collaborate with employees on different issues that come up in the workplace. This is considered a participatory management style and is due to a small power-distance (Neuliep, 2021). While this level of participation often works well in a U.S. office, other countries at times have different views of management and employee engagement. In large power-distance cultures, such as Mexico and China, a participatory management style being implemented at a business or organization may cause employees to feel undervalued and could cause disarray. Because Mexican employees value the well-being of the group, a manager singling out one employee or bringing up concerns in the workplace to the group would likely cause disruption of harmony and tension between employees. A U.S. manager would need to focus on forming positive relationships with Mexican employees over non-work related topics (Neuliep, 2021). In China, which is also considered a large power-distance country, a manager of a company is expected to make decisions with the best interest of the employees (Neuliep, 2021). Similar to Mexico, the Chinese value forming relationships and harmony, which would entail U.S. managers to practice mixing business with other topics in order to form positive relationships with employees (Neuliep, 2021). How do patients across cultures prefer to make medical decisions? I was very surprised to learn that despite differences in cultural values, such as power-distance and individualism vs. collectivism, that many patients prefer to make joint-decisions with their medical provider (Neuliep, 2021). One study reviewed in our textbook this week surveyed patients from Hong Kong, Australia, the United States, China, and Japan about their preferences in making medical decisions. Due to the large power-distance present in Hong Kong, China, and Japan, it was speculated that these patients would likely choose to depend more on their medical provider than their own judgment when faced with a medical decision (Neuliep, 2021). Conversely, because the U.S. and Australia are small power-distance countries, the hypothesis was that patients would choose joint-decision making and tend more towards self-reliance. Surprisingly, the study found that patients from all of these cultures chose joint-decision making with their medical provider and wanted to participate in the discussion and decision making related to their own health (Neuliep, 2021). However, there are many factors that ultimately can affect how an individual develops a style of learning. A learning style can be defined as "an individual's unique way of gathering, sorting, and retrieving information to solve problems" (Neuliep, 2021). In a study covered in our textbook that spanned seven nations, it was found that specialization, which is the area of study that an individual hones in on, plays more of a role in learning style than culture does (Neuliep, 2021). It was also found that individualism and collectivism, as well as the level of uncertainty avoidance, played a role in whether the individuals in the study preferred a more reflective or abstract learning style (Neuliep, 2021).
