The three strategies I would use to promote productive innovative practices are delegation, collaboration, and competitive insights.

As a manager, you generally see areas of opportunity by your own metrics, or it's pointed out from those above you. However, many mangers feel as if it's their responsibility to solve it, and struggle with coming up with a solution. By delegating to others, you can choose tasks or problems to delegate that are more in the wheelhouse of someone on your team. For example, I knew my team needed a better training program, but I did not have the time to create one. I delegated this to someone on my team that is extremely organized, and what they created is still being used two years later. They were innovative on what tools to use to train, and how to plan it out, and now it's a very productive and effective process.

The second one, collaboration, focusses on large scale issues. Many times one organization will have a problem that effect multiple departmental silos, and those silos will try to solve the issues on their own. By encouraging collaboration, a solution can be created that solves the issue in a way that is beneficial to both solos, rather than just one.

Finally, the third I would use is competitive insights. Generally speaking there are always competitors to your organization, and because of this you must know about them. We have all heard, do not reinvent the wheel, just enhance it. That's what competitive insight is. You see what your competitors are doing, and determine a way to enhance on what they are doing, and make it more effective and efficient for your organization. We see this all the time, with every industry, and it's one of the best ways to really promote productive innovation.
