How to prevent unethical behavior? Our research results point to the need to alleviate the pressure to act unethically and prevent the fear of speaking up. These are inherently emotional issues - and to address them, emotional skills are needed. So what can managers and organizations do? First, they should cultivate emotional intelligence skills in managers and leaders. These skills can be either selected for in the recruitment process or built through leadership development programs. In our research, employees whose supervisors acted in emotionally intelligent ways experienced less pressure to behave unethically and were in turn less likely to experience tension at work. This has an added benefit: These employees were also less likely to contemplate leaving their jobs. Second, managers need to communicate their ethical standards and values to employees. The attitude of caring only about outcomes, but not processes, may leave the door open to an ends-justifying-the-means mindset. It is thus not surprising that employees in organizations with unethical climates are afraid to speak up. Speaking up about their problems makes them the problem in the eyes of managers and leaders.
