The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) is a legal agreement between the countries that participate, to reduce or eliminate barriers to trade. Trade barriers are tariffs or quotas and GATT help reduce or eliminate these resulting in free trade. Once GATT had reduced or eliminated these barriers, countries started to recognize that free trade was a great thing for their economy and had many advantages. The advantages that GATT brought to participating countries was great and more countries joined as a result, increasing the number of participating countries from 23 to 128.
