Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW) is an example of an organization that facilitates creativity and innovation through their open team organizational structure. They developed conditions that allows people the freedom to share ideas and help each other to develop those ideas resolve problems. It is through their open communication and organizational culture that cultivates creativity and innovation.
As a former employee of VSUW, I witnessed many different innovative ideas prove to be successful. Two big innovations went hand in hand. One was moving from the traditional office setting to an open interactive floor plan. Prior to the open concept, VSUW slowly began implementing telecommuting. As many of its employees were out on the field engaging with the community and partners. Working remotely at different locations provided employees with the tools necessary to fully interact with the community. Then came the move. With the move, the concept was to provide an open floor plan that gave employees a place to land for a day or two. Open meeting areas with different settings. There were no set offices other than that for the Finance and Human Resources departments. Even the CEO opened his office as an open meeting room. Think of it like Goggle's office. The concept actually was based off of several visits to their offices in Tempe.
How did this innovation help VSUW success? It gave the community and stakeholders a welcoming place to come to. Meeting rooms were open to use for their needs, such as meetings or trainings. The technology at VSUW offices is top of the line. You can walk up to a meeting room and plug right in and display on a massive wall, while splitting the screen for those attending online and view their faces. This all came at a time when charitable giving began to change, and VSUW began with innovative conceptual office and worked from there. As opined by Desai (2013) when three(alignment, insights, and mobilization) critical aspects come together the "innovation and the long-term sustainability" is the success of the organization. For VSUW this allowed them to maneuver smoothly when there were any inhibited structures.
