Successful communication is used throughout a change process in many ways. To begin, communication is an open channel in which parties interact with one another and are given opportunities to respond and provide feedback. Conveying vision and strategies to stakeholders takes leaders skilled in communication to appeal to each stakeholder's unique values and investments within the company. Communication and dissemination of information may occur through virtual or in person means and may also occur to small or large groups. Ideally, communication will take place using all of these methods in order to reach the most stakeholders in a way that allows them to learn, adapt and process changes occurring within the organization. Small group communication also gives the best opportunities for stakeholders to provide feedback and gain clarification from project managers. However, regardless of method, open communication, clear intentions and a defined, curated project vision is vital to the success of a change initiative. If the change process begins to fail, it may be a result of poor project communication. Often times, intention behind a change may be unclear and therefore create confusion and resistance among staff. Lack of ability to create desire to participate in change by change leaders can also cause projects to fail. Moreover, lack of open communication or opportunities for stakeholders to provide feedback or seek clarification from change leaders may lead to poor outcomes. Finally, change leaders may not be recognizing and communicating their empathy with those experiencing change which can make stakeholders feel out of place in the organization.
