How would a utilitarianist calculate the greatest happiness for the greatest number in the HOA scenario before making an ethical decision on the maintenance fee? a. They would have to calculate the cost of maintaining the pond over the next 100 years and then divide the cost equally between all the households. That would be the fee that each household pays which would be the greatest happiness for the greatest number. b. They would first evaluate the pros and cons of paying the fees or not paying the fees and how that contributes to the overall happiness of the neighborhood. Since paying a small fee each month would prevent flooding in the neighborhood they would calculate that the fees would cause the greatest happiness (no flooding) for the greatest number (all households). 2 points
