How would one respond to this?

Culture is defined as "a unique meaning and information system, shared by a group and transmitted across generations, that allows the group to meet basic needs of survival, pursue happiness and well-being, and derive meaning from life" (Matsumoto & Yuang, 2017, p. 7). In order to have culture, there must be group life. When there are many people living near each other and interacting with each other, making social complexity. By having complicated social interaction, there must be rules and order put into place for society to follow to create order. Culture is a description of the way that a group of people live. Culture is split up into two different elements. Objective elements "involve objective, explicit elements that are physical" (Matsumoto & Yuang, 2017, p. 21). Objective elements would be physical, tangible artifacts. Subjective elements "include all those parts of a culture that do not survive people as physical artifacts" (Matsumoto & Yuang, 2017, p. 21). Subjective elements would be behaviors, values, and beliefs.

Culture is studied in many different ways. One way is through cross-cultural validation studies, which is "a study that examines whether a measure of a psychological construct that was originally generated in a single culture is applicable, meaningful, and thus equivalent in another culture" (Matsumoto & Yuang, 2017, p. 33). The result of these studies is trying to find similarities in different cultures through objective elements of those cultures. Another way to study culture is through indigenous cultural studies, which "use rich, complex, and in-depth descriptions of cultures and cultural differences to predict and test for differences in a psychological variable" (Matsumoto & Yuang, 2017, p. 34). The results from these in-depth studies are compared to other detailed studies, trying to find comparisons of the different cultures.
