know we are only required to answer one question, but interestingly, the second question about a workplace culture of silence dovetails into my example in the the first question regarding external forces for change. In my previous organization we encountered a culture of silence surrounding the implementation of flexible work practices where the organization showed an "unwillingness to engage, to participate, and to be open" (Spector, 2016, p. 64). To overcome organizational silence, leaders must commit to mutual engagement and learning while inviting employees to participate in a dialogue (Gilley et al., 2009). This did not happen in the example above because the leader of the organization did not create or sustain a climate of openness and honest conversation. When I moved to become the leader of a new organization, I took the lessons learned from that experience and worked hard to foster dialogue and establish a climate of openness in my new organization. I held town halls, requested anonymous feedback, and shared the actions that the organization was taking in response to the feedback I had received. Fortunately, our new organization does not seem to be suffering from a workplace culture of silence today, but I encourage my managers to focus every day to make sure we do not inadvertently slip into one.
