how would you respond to this?

The clientele I specialize with ae troubled youth, and I had a 12 year old male named Doug who was referred to me. He comes from a family of four however his older brother was killed in the military. From what he has explained his family fell apart from here, years after his mother and father split and they share custody of Doug. Doug spends weekends with his dad and the week with his mom.

Doug also has ADHD which makes it hard for him to focus in both school and in completing his daily tasks at home.

What I find stressful for this client is it seems like he has a lot on his plate at a young age. Having to deal with the instability of moving in between his mother and father's home along with juggling schoolwork, this could be a lot for a young mind who may not understand everything that is going on. Or if they do understand it may be too much to handle. This clients scenario connects with my triggers because it is similar to things I have gone through, not all of this scenario, but some. Growing up from a broken home at the age of eight was difficult, there's a lot of pieces that you don't understand and some tend to blame themselves for how everything happened.

I feel that these similarities may disrupt my work with this client because it may bring up old emotions that I still work on. Some days are easier than others but it never gets easier, which this can make this process overwhelming.

Some specific self-care skills I would implement is having a day to meditate, going outside, or doing something that I enjoy. I would take a day to just breath and not thing about the negative things. Another good one would be having a day without electronics, there is so much negativity and so many things that could retrigger certain emotions you may have taking a day away from social media etc, could be a healthy reset.
