Flame from lamp (A) catches on curtain (B) and fire department sends stream of water (C) through window. Man (D) thinks it is raining and reaches for umbrella (E),pulling string (F) and lifting end of platform (G). Iron ball (H) falls and pulls string (I),causing hammer (J) to hit plate of glass (K). Crash of glass wakes up pup (L) and mother dog (M) rocks him to sleep in cradle (N),causing attached wooden hand (O) to move up and down along your back.This is known as a Rube Goldberg cartoon.Rube Goldberg (1883 -1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist,sculptor,and author. Rube originally drew daily cartoons for newspapers across the United States. The cartoons featured his "inventions" which discovered very difficult ways to achieve easy results.Technology is usually created to make difficult tasks simple, in his inventions, he made simple tasks incredibly difficult. With these cartoons he sought to represent the human capacity to accomplish minimal results with maximum effort. Often projects that are unnecessarily complicated are known as "Rube Goldberg-like".In his cartoons, you might see dozens of arms,wheels,gears,handles,cups,and rods put intomotion by balls, canary cages,pails,boots, bathtubs,paddles,and live animals for simple tasks like squeezing an orange for juice or closing a window in case it should start to rain before one gets home.

We will be making overly complicated,highly inventive Rube Goldberg machines!

Challenge: To make a working Rube Goldberg machine. Machine Requirements:

The machine must complete the challenge chosen .

Must fit inside a 2m x 2m enclosure (height can very)

The machine must have a minimum of five different (5 ) steps. There is no maximum number of steps.

The machine must run for no more than two (2) minutes per run.

Must be able to be reset (if it doesn't work the first time, you must be able to try again). The machine will have a maximum ten (10) minute reset time.

Any loose or flying objects must remain within the set boundaries of the machine. This includes, but is not limited to, drops of water, slivers of balloon, and other "small" objects. Steam and other gasses are exempt from this rule.

The machine may utilize one (1) power cord. No other cords may be run to or from the machine; however there is no limit to the number of cords utilized within the space of the machine.

Steps to finish this challenge:

Step1: Design 1) What is your machine going to do? Here are some ideas:

  • Put toothpaste on a toothbrush
  • Adhere a stamp to a letter
  • Sharpen a pencil
  • Put coins in a bank
  • Play a CD
  • Shut off an alarm clock
  • Set a golf ball onto a tee
  • Peel an apple
  • Light a match
  • Toast a slice of bread
  • Unlock a combination padlock or a keyed lock
  • Screw a light bulb into a socket
  • Make cup of coffee
  • Raise and wave a flag
  • Crush an empty pop can
  • Turn on a flashlight
  • Shred 5 Sheets of Paper
  • Squeeze the juice from an orange

Step 2: Brainstorm Time! Time to Plan! brainstorm ways to solve this problem and agree on strategies. Pick the solution that you can agree on!

Design Questions:

a. How is your machine going to complete the task? Decide on each of the 10 steps (or more) to do the final job of the machine.

b. What materials are you going to use?

c. How are you going to assemble them together?

d. What tools do you need to build your machine?

e. What is going to power your machine?

f. What support are you going to use to move your machine around safely?

g. How will you incorporate the physics that we have learned into the machine?

i. What energy transformations are there?

ii. What physics concepts/calculations are we going to use?

Step 3 : Patent your Invention-HAND IN Think of how scientists protect their original design by patenting their work. To apply for a patent, you need to put your idea down on paper - words and drawings - label each part of the machine and describe how it works. Be sure to state what the overall goal of your machine is (what is its task)

Step 4 : Build and Test Once your machine is ready, test it and modify your design as time allows to make it work.

Step 5 : Write Your Final Report

Final Report Requirements must submit an engineering report with the following requirements in the given order: A cover sheet A sketch of the final Rube Goldberg device with labels and description of how each piece works. A sketch of the original Rube Goldberg A detailed description of at least 3 challenges you had in making your machine work and how they were overcome in the building of the device The answers to the questions listed below under "The Physics Behind the Machine"

Unit 1: Motion - identify one part of your machine for which you will calculate the speed of that section. Be sure to consider precision. Organize all collected data in an organized table. Show all work. Remember to identify the part of the machine you have chosen.

Unit 2: Forces and Newton's Laws - identify one part of your machine and draw a free body diagram of it - state how and where all 3 Newton's Laws have a role in your machine - discuss the role that friction plays in your machine - identify the part of your machine which wou ld experience the most friction and the least friction (explain your choices)

Unit 3: Energy, Work & Power - identify all of the different types of energy present in your machine and state where they are on your machine ; calculate the energy present for O NE of the identified types. - draw energy transformation equations for TWO parts of your machine. Clearly indicate which parts of the machine you are using.

Unit 4: Sound - choose TWO topics/ lessons discussed in the sound unit and state where and how they apply to your machine

Unit 5: Electricity and Magnetism - your machine must have either an electric component OR a magnetic component. IF YOU CHOOSE ELECTRICTY: Explain how electricity is created and how it makes this part of your machine work Calculate the electric charge for your component if it is used for 5min.

IF YOU CHOOSE MAGNETISM: Explain how substances are magnetic and how magnetism works in general State h ow you are using magnetism to make your machine work. State 2 ways in which your magnet could stop working.

Step 6 : Display your Invention for the WORLD!!! Have a spokesperson or spokespeople describe how your excellent machine works and what task it is suppose to complete . Set -up your machine and show us how it works!
