The scenario

A friend of yours plans to pursue a career in policing, so you tell him that you are presently studying the RCMP in an online social studies course. It turns out that he has a strong opinion regarding the RCMP.

He tells you that he plans to work for the Vancouver Police Department as he doesn't like how the RCMP are organized. He tells you that a federal police force should not have control over provincial and local police forces. He tells you that no other country organizes their police into a "one-size-fits-all" solution. "It is absurd," he insists.

Your response

Write multi-paragraph response to your friend's position, neither completely agreeing or disagreeing.

You will need to show that you understand that the RCMP as it stands has its strengths and weaknesses. You should know that although most provinces and territories use the RCMP as their provincial police force, none is required to. The same goes for municipalities and First Nations.

Your response is not meant to be a formal essay. It should sound more like a spoken retort. You might be able to submit this as an audio recording but should speak to your teacher first. Another option is to write as a dialogue between you and your friend.
