PHYSICS 111 Experiment # Friction and the Inclined Plane Name: Grade: Instructor: Partners: Date Performed: Comments: Date Submitted: Ohjective: To determine the coefficient of friction required in moving a load up and down aramp at a constant velocity, and the differences between rolling and sliding friction. Required Equipment: Exploration Physics Mass on an inclined plane. Procedure: 1. Open the software, click on motion, and select the activity: Mass on an inclined plane. 2. The software allows you to simulate amass falling down an incline plane with and without friction. 3. First of all, you will test the software WITHOUT friction, and yvou will verify the equation for the acceleration of a mass given by: @ = gsina, where \"a\" is the angle of the inclined. 4. Choose a value of a in between 20 and 50 degrees, increase the height of the plane to its maximum level and in the XY graphing chart, place \"acceleration\" in the y axis and \"time\" in the x axis. 5. For this experiment the mass will not matter but make sure it does not exceed 5 kg and more importantly make sure the coetfficient of friction is ZERO. 6. Let the mass fall a few times and record the value of the acceleration from the plot. DO NOT USE THE ONE GIVEN IN THE SOFTWARE!!, When finding this value of acceleration, make sure you carefully analyze the scale on the graph. 7. Compute the theoretical acceleration using Newton's second law and perform an error comparison. Procedure (continued) - Friction 8. RESET the software and make sure this time you add friction by giving a random value to the coefficient of friction. Make sure this value does not go over 1.0 9. For your first trial, make sure the mass is of 2.5 kg and that you choose the maximum possible height. 10. In the X graphing chart, you will place \"velocity in the y axis and \"time in the x axis. To find the acceleration you will need to carefully find the slope of this graph. 11. DRAW a free body diagram of the mass and show ALL forces acting on the mass and a theoretical computation of the \"theoretical\" coefficient of friction by using the acceleration you obtained from the experiment. 12. Compare the values of p and explain any differences. 8. Repeat steps 8 through 12 for a different mass and coefficient of friction. Calculations: 1. Calculate the acceleration using both coefficients of frictions for at least one of the simulations. What are the differences? Explain why thizmight be. 2. Use the information from the graph \"velocity vs time to find the LENGTH of incline. Hint: Use kinematic equations. Questions: 1. Calculatethe coefficient of friction (p ) for the wooden box going up and down the ramp. 2. What factors effects 1? 3. Discuss what is being demonstrated in this experiment
