Consider the following: "Extrinsic Rewards" are those that someone else gives to you (e.g. a merit bonus, a promotion, a good score on your performance appraisal, etc.). "Intrinsic Rewards" are those that you give to yourself (e.g. the satisfaction of knowing you did your best, the good feeling that comes with progress or the learning of something new).
