Throughout my life, criticism produced psychological discomfort (often referred to as growing pains).

In some cases, the criticism allowed me to grow; in others, the criticism compelled me to obsess & wilt.

So much of my childhood was spent trying to avoid criticism, when so much of it should have been seeking it out by trying new things, & learning to separate the substance from the nonsense.
